Our team is made up of passionate individuals from diverse backgrounds within the Chesapeake Fire Department. Together, we bring a wealth of life experiences, professional knowledge, and skills to make a positive impact on the lives of the Explorers and the community.
In addition to our leadership team, various members of the department actively participate in events and training sessions. This ensures that our Explorers receive diverse, hands-on experiences and valuable guidance from professionals across the fire service.
We are deeply committed to guiding these young individuals, helping them grow personally and professionally, and preparing them for a rewarding future in the fire service.
Lieutenant LeVario Franklin joined the Chesapeake Fire Department in 2006 and, through hard work and commitment, earned his promotion to Lieutenant in 2021.
In 2023, Lt. Franklin became a mentor and leader in the Explorers Program, recognizing the profound impact it could have on young lives. He saw a need to guide kids who were heading down the wrong path, understanding that exposure to the fire and emergency services could shift their mindset toward a more positive and productive future. At the same time, he recognized those with a true passion for the fire service and wanted to help them develop their skills and pursue their dreams.
With a dedication to mentorship and a deep commitment to shaping future first responders, Lt. Franklin continues to lead by example, instilling discipline, resilience, and a sense of purpose in every Explorer he mentors.
Paulus “PJ” Johnson grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and made the life-changing decision to move to Virginia to build a better future. In 2011, he joined the Chesapeake Fire Department, where he has since risen to the rank of Senior Firefighter and serves on multiple teams within the department.
In 2023, PJ took on the role of mentor and leader within the Explorer Program, driven by his own experiences growing up without a positive influence or guidance. He understands firsthand what it’s like to navigate life without mentorship and didn’t find that support until his late 20s. Knowing that many young people are unaware of their full potential, PJ is passionate about helping them discover their strengths, build confidence, and pursue meaningful careers in the fire service.
In July 2025, PJ will achieve his goal of becoming a certified Paramedic, further expanding his ability to serve his community. His dedication, leadership, and commitment to mentorship make him an invaluable part of the Explorer Program.
Angie Brinkley began her career with the Chesapeake Fire Department in 2018 as the Office Coordinator for the Community Risk Reduction Division/Fire Marshal’s Office. In 2022, she made history as the first civilian administrator in the department to earn an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science, demonstrating her dedication to continuous learning and professional growth.
With over 30 years of experience working with children and young adults—from preschoolers to teenagers—Angie has a deep passion for mentorship. She is committed to guiding teenagers and young adults toward a fulfilling career in the fire and emergency services, helping them discover a path that is both rewarding and impactful to their community.
In May 2025, Angie will achieve certification as a Fire and Life Safety Educator, further strengthening her ability to educate, inspire, and lead the next generation. Her dedication to shaping future first responders and community leaders makes her an invaluable part of the Explorer Program.
